Snow Emergency Levels and Road Closures
Pursuant to Ohio Attorney General Opinion 86-023, a county sheriff may declare a snow emergency and temporarily close county and township roads within their jurisdiction to protect public safety. Attorney General Opinion 97-015 further authorizes the sheriff to close state and municipal roads when conditions warrant.
There are three levels of snow emergency classifications:
LEVEL 1 – Advisory
Roadways are hazardous. Motorists are urged to drive with caution.
LEVEL 2 – Warning
Roadways are hazardous due to blowing and drifting snow and may be very icy. Only those who feel it is necessary to travel should be on the roads. Motorists should use extreme caution and are encouraged to contact their employer regarding work attendance.
LEVEL 3 – Emergency
All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving unless it is absolutely necessary due to a personal or emergency situation. Individuals traveling during a Level 3 Snow Emergency may be subject to arrest. Employees should contact their employer to determine whether they should report to work.
